After graduating with a degree in English and Mass Communications, Sumathi’s career took off at Universiti Sains Malaysia as a language tutor. Here she was exposed to a vast range of experience including developing and coordinating courses for universities and corporate sector. The desire to be more knowledgeable and better qualified prompted her to pursue her Masters degree in English As A Second Language. Having read her masters, she worked in a number of organizations, developing and conducting language programs.
In 1998, she was headhunted by a communication skills training company – QLA Learning Associates to be the resource person for Business English programs. Her odyssey as a trainer for Business English continued.<br>
Her job stint at QLA involved tailoring and designing Business English & Business Communication programs to meet each client’s learning and development needs, to make the training relevant and practical for the participants.<br>
In 2003, Sumathi founded Stratford Training & Consultancy Sdn Bhd, a communication skills training company based in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. She is currently the Principal Consultant & Director of Stratford Training.
She specializes in programs such as Presentation Skills, Customer Service Skills, Business English, Effective Telephone Techniques, Personal Branding, E-mail Etiquette and Business Writing.
Sumathi strongly believes in personal development and has completed a course in training practice with the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, UK. She is also a Certified Coach, specializing in Executive Coaching. She does one-on-one and group coaching for clients. She is also a Certified NLP Practitioner from NFNLP. Altogether, she has 25 years of experience teaching English and has been in the corporate training industry for the past 18 years.<br>
In 2019 & 2020, Sumathi was in the list of “100 Most inspirational LinkedIn Icons in Malaysia you should follow” by the Marketing in Asia online magazine.
She is currently the Secretary of the Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers (MAPS).
